2011-12 NEAC Men’s Basketball Playoff Tournament Field Set

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – With the 2011-12 regular season officially in the books, this year’s North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament field is now set.

With this season being split into North and South divisional play, the top two teams from each division advanced to the playoffs, with the fifth and final team being decided by the winner of the crossover game between the two teams that finished in third place in each respective division.

The Morrisville State College Mustangs, who finished with program-best records of 14-1 in the conference and 17-8 overall, won the NEAC North Division and earned the right to host this weekend’s tournament, which was discussed in detail here.

Also advancing to the tournament from the North Division is the defending champion Wells College Express, who ended the regular season on an eight-game conference winning streak and finished second in the North with an 11-4 conference record (14-11 overall).

The remaining three teams making it to the five-team tournament will come from the NEAC South Division.  The Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions finished atop the division with a program-best 12-2 conference record, while finishing the season a school-best 19-6 overall.  The Penn State Berks Nittany Lions claimed second place in the South with a 9-5 NEAC record (10-13 overall) thanks to seven straight conference victories to close the season.

Rounding out the South teams to make the tournament were the Gallaudet University Bison, who secured the final playoff spot by finishing third in the division with an 8-6 conference record (11-12 overall), while also defeating the North’s third place team, Cazenovia College, 63-60 during the two teams’ crossover contest on January 7.

Berks will now host Gallaudet in the tournament’s quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 8 p.m.  The winner will then advance to take on Morrisville State in the semifinal round of the tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.  Harrisburg and Berks will square off at Morrisville in Saturday’s other semifinal round game at 2 p.m.
