Penn State Berks Advances to NEAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Semifinals with Victory over Gallaudet

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The 2011-12 NEAC Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament semifinals are now in place, as the Penn State Berks Nittany Lions defeated the Gallaudet University Bison 67-62 in yesterday’s quarterfinal round to advance to the second round.

After the game went into halftime tied at 32, Penn State Berks would build a nine-point lead early in the second half.  The Bison refused to go away, though, and were down just three, 63-60, with 33 seconds remaining.  Sophomore Shawn Green (Philadelphia, Pa.) would seal the deal for the Nittany Lions, however, sinking four clutch free throws in the closing seconds en route to finishing the contest with a game- and career-high 28 points.

Sophomore center Tom Smith (Norristown, Pa.) posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for Berks, while senior forward Connor Hough (Telford, Pa.) added 10 points.  Junior forward and NEAC All-Conference Second Team selection Jeff Schmidt (Orefield, Pa.) dished out a game-high six assists to go along with five points, eight boards and a team-best two blocks.

Gallaudet senior and All-Conference Third Team selection Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) scored a team-high 16 points for the Bison, while fellow classmate and All-Conference First Teamer Brandon McMillan (Frederick, Md.) registered 15 points, seven rebounds and a team-best three steals.  Senior forward Daniel Fava (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and junior guard Jocus Houston (Baton Rouge, La.) swiped a game-high five steals to go along with 10 points. 

Berks will now take on host and top overall seed Morrisville State College this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.  The round’s other matchup will see Penn State Harrisburg take on Wells College at 2 p.m.  The winners of each contest will then advance to the championship game on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at Morrisville.
