NEAC Announces Three New Associate Members for 2019-20

NEAC Announces Three New Associate Members for 2019-20

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Presidents’ Council has accepted Alfred State, The College of Saint Elizabeth and SUNY Potsdam as Associate Members in three different sports with each institution beginning its membership in the 2019-20 academic year.

Alfred State will join the NEAC as an associate member in men’s lacrosse while the College of Saint Elizabeth will be an Associate Member in men’s tennis. SUNY Potsdam is the final addition to the conference in the sport of men’s volleyball. As per the NEAC Constitution and Bylaws, associate members are accepted into NEAC on a two-year term with the option to reapply at the conclusion of each term.

Alfred State will bring the NEAC to nine teams sponsoring the sport of men’s lacrosse next year. The Pioneers completed the process to become an official NCAA Division III member in June 2018 with 19 intercollegiate teams and 400 student-athletes competing on campus. In preparation for joining the league next spring, Alfred State will play six of the eight current NEAC men’s lacrosse teams during the 2019 season.

“Joining the NEAC finalizes our quest to secure conference affiliations for each NCAA sport we sponsor,” shared Alfred State Director of Athletics Jason Doviak. “This is a terrific opportunity for our men’s lacrosse student-athletes as we continue to enhance their experience at the Division III level. I would like to thank President Rogers, Commissioner Murray, the NEAC Presidents’ Council and the NEAC Athletic Directors for accepting Alfred State as a member, as well as the support they provided throughout the process.”

While the College of Saint Elizabeth will see its time as a full-member institution of the NEAC come to an end at the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year, the Eagles will remain an Associate Member in the sport of men’s tennis. The program is currently in its second season of existence at the College of Saint Elizabeth and remaining in the league as an associate member will allow the Eagles an opportunity for continued growth for its men’s tennis team. The College of Saint Elizabeth will also be an associate member in the sport of men’s volleyball, which was approved by the NEAC Presidents’ Council last summer.

“The College of Saint Elizabeth is excited to remain as an associate member of the NEAC for men’s tennis,” said College of Saint Elizabeth Director of Athletics Juliene Simpson. “We believe it is a great move for our student-athletes and look forward to competing in the NEAC this year and beyond.”

SUNY Potsdam in the final incoming associate member, joining the NEAC in men’s volleyball. The Bears will be adding men’s volleyball to their varsity sport offerings in 2019-20, bringing SUNY Potsdam to a total of 19 intercollegiate athletic programs. The approval of SUNY Potsdam gives the conference seven teams to compete for the NEAC championship in 2020.

“We’re very excited to join the NEAC as a men’s volleyball associate member,” said SUNY Potsdam Director of Athletics Sharief Hashim. “We hope our addition will serve to strengthen men’s volleyball in the state and the conference. Joining the NEAC as an associate member will broaden our recruiting reach in regions that are strong in New York state boys’ high school and club volleyball.”

NEAC Commissioner Candice Murray is pleased with the three additions as it allows the league to continue to work toward its goal of acquiring or maintaining automatic qualifiers for all of its conference-sponsored sports.

“The NEAC is very excited to welcome Alfred State, the College of Saint Elizabeth and SUNY Potsdam as associate members,” Murray added. “Our membership felt strongly that each of these programs will help to ensure the conference remains strong in the sports of men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and men’s volleyball. We look forward to their participation and believe each program will contribute to the overall success of the NEAC.”
