NEAC Announces Student-Athlete of the Week Selections in Women's & Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf and Women's & Men's Swimming & Diving for 10-20-14

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its Student-Athlete of the Week selections in the sports of women’s and men’s cross country and men’s golf for the period running from Monday, October 13 through Sunday, October 19.  These are also the first set of selections of the season for women’s and men’s swimming & diving and reflect all results thus far through Sunday, October 19.

Taylor Tommell (Guilderland, N.Y.) has been selected as the NEAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week after an excellent performance for the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers. The sophomore posted her first intercollegiate race victory during the Green Mountain Invitational this past Saturday, as she completed the soggy five-kilometer course in 20:26 to take first place out of 48 runners.  The performance helped the Fighting Tigers to their first invitational win of the year, as they posted 31 points to best the five-team field.  

 

 

 

 

Alexander Kane (Doylestown, Pa.) has been named the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week after another phenomenal performance for the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions.  Competing in a field of 355 runners at the eight-kilometer Gettysburg Invitational, the junior captured ninth place with a finish time of 26:12 and was outside the top-five by a mere six seconds.  It was Kane’s fifth top-10 finish of the year for the Nittany Lions, who placed 21st overall out of 34 teams.

 

 

 


Mike Lam (Langhorne, Pa.) has been chosen as the NEAC Men’s Golfer of the Week after a pair of strong outings for the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions.  The junior was the top Abington finisher at a pair of events last week, as he carded a four-over 76 to take a tie for third place out of 61 golfers at the Chestnut Hill Invitational last Tuesday before tying for 12th place out of 87 participants with a score of 78 at the par-70 Rutgers-Camden Invitational Saturday. 

 

 

 


Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) has been selected as the NEAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week after an excellent start to the season for the Gallaudet University Bison.  The senior placed first in all five of the individual events she has competed in thus far, including three during a dual with Frostburg State University this past Saturday.  Polivanchuk was the first to touch the wall in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.50, the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.05 and the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:04.17.  She also took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (0:25.22) and the 100-yard freestyle (0:55.82) during a dual with Ferrum to open the season back on Oct. 4, which the Bison won 97-95.

The Rest of the Week’s Highlights

Women’s Cross Country: Wells College sophomore Deaven Theriault (Ludlow, Mass.) competed at the Cross Country Only Championships for the second straight year and improved her time by 13 seconds after finishing in 20:18.6, which helped her place eighth out of 132 runners.

Men’s Cross Country: SUNY Cobleskill freshman Anthony Bouchard (Wantagh, N.Y.) helped the Fighting Tigers to their second invitational victory of the season after he placed fourth out of 38 runners with a time of 27:34 at the five-team Green Mountain Invitational Saturday … Gallaudet University sophomore Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) placed 12th out of 101 runners at the Hood College Open Invitational Saturday after completing the eight-kilometer course in a season-best time of 28:00.1 … Morrisville State College sophomore Byron Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) placed 15th out of 144 runners with a collegiate-best time of 27:31.5 during the Cross Country Only Championships Saturday, which was the fifth-best time in program history for an eight-kilometer course … SUNYIT senior Jordan Sirtoli (West Winfield, N.Y.) placed 17th at that same event after crossing the finish line in 27:35.6.

Men’s Golf: Rutgers University-Camden senior Kevin Anderson (Delran, N.J.) finished in a tie for 10th place out of 87 golfers during the school’s own Scarlet Raptor Invitational last Friday, as he shot a 77 on the par-70 course … Penn College senior Corey Teeple (Lake Ariel, Pa.) closed out the fall season with a 19th place finish out of 130 golfers during the two-day USCAA National Championships last Monday and Tuesday, as he carded a two-day score of 159 (84-75) on the par-72 course to help the Wildcats finish in eighth place out of 25 teams.
