Penn State Berks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee holds "Holiday Food Drive"

READING, Pa. The Penn State Berks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its second annual Holiday Food Drive during the last month of the fall semester. The group accepted non-perishable food items and cash donations, all of which went to the Greater Berks Food Bank in Reading, Pa.

SAAC members placed boxes around campus to collect donations from the student-body, faculty and staff. A total of 166 pounds of donated food items that included pasta, canned goods, cereal, and more were collected.

The effort also raised $157.50 that will go toward the “Weekender Backpack Buddy” program. This program gives children a backpack filled with enough food for six meals and two snacks and includes non-food items (shampoo, toothbrush, toilet paper, etc.). The backpacks are distributed to children on Fridays or the last day before school holidays.

Special thanks go to the Student Affairs staff, who donated $137.50 from their annual holiday collection to the Greater Berks Food Bank. Each year just before the holidays, the Student Affairs staff makes donations and chooses a charity or organization to help out.

Members from SAAC have also made two visits to the Greater Berks Food Bank this past semester. On Wednesday, Oct. 3, the members packed three skids worth of locally grown potatoes. The student-athletes alos packed boxes with non-perishable food to be delivered to local families in a visit on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The Greater Berks Food Bank collects, stores and distributes food to more than 270 charitable agencies in the Berks area and surrounding counties. For more information on the Greater Berks Food Bank, please click here.
